The NBA Salary Cap in 30 Seconds

The NBA does not have a simple hard salary cap.

Instead, think of it as several spending lines:

$164.961M — Salary Cap $200.428M — Luxury Tax Line $209.015M — First Apron $221.686M — Second Apron

Those are the official thresholds for the 2026–27 NBA season.

A team can spend above the normal salary cap. What changes is how it can add players and how painful the consequences become.

The simplest way to think about it:

Below the cap: Lots of flexibility Above the cap: Still normal for NBA teams Above the tax: Ownership starts paying penalties Above the first apron: Team-building options become restricted Above the second apron: Major restrictions kick in

Worked examples use illustrative teams and simplified numbers to teach the rules. They are not live payrolls or approvals of real transactions.
